Aromatherapy and the Menopause

aromatherapy and the menopause

Aromatherapy works with essential oils as a treatment for women in the menopause, as it may help to provide relief from symptoms in the menopause such as hot flushes, racing heart beat, insomnia, anxiety, depression, headaches and mood swings.

This is because, certain essential oils such as clary sage, fennel, cypress, angelica, and coriander contain traces of phytoestrogen that help to strengthen sex hormones.

Geranium oil has been recognised to balance hormones and rose oil helps to improve uterus function. Evening primrose is commonly used in aromatherapy for symptomatic relief in menopausal women. Other oils that have shown to be helpful for the menopause are peppermint, basil, neroli and vitex-agnus-castus oil.

You can use essential oils in a number of ways, such as adding a few drops of essential oil to a body moisturiser such as almond oil, into your bath mixed with half a cup of coconut milk, onto your pillow at night or onto a tissue to hold under your nose to inhale, or into a spray bottle with purified water and spray it around your home. Oil diffusers and burners are also very popular. You can use 2 - 10 drops, depending on your desired intensity of the fragrance.
